Tools to Support Social and Emotional Learning and Self Advocacy for Individuals with Autism

The morning workshop will introduce therapists and educators to the challenges associated with autism and ADHD that interfere with a student's ability to be successful in the classroom because of cognitive rigidity and poor reciprocal conversation skills. Drawing from three Ivymount developed curricula and tools, educators will get an overview of how 
Unstuck and On Target!Conversation Club and IvySCIP can be used to assess, plan for and support the development of essential skills that enhance learning, executive functioning, interaction skills and self-regulation.

The afternoon workshop will showcase 
This is Me: A Self-Advocacy Tool, which supports individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities in sharing important information about themselves to different communication partners across a variety of settings. This Is Me is a customized, electronic tool developed using a story creation application that is easy to program and contains strategies and/or supports the student uses in the areas of communication, self-advocacy, executive function, behavior, and/or personal preferences. Presenters will explain the tool and how it benefits students, as well as, provide step-by-step instruction for how to create and use a This is Me story.
